MINICT and MINEDUC started distributing laptops to varsity students

Delivering laptops to students at the University of Rwanda, Minister Paula INGABIRE told them effort of resuming this exercise of distributing laptops is really tidily to the Government objective of shifting from a teacher-centered methodology of learning to a more active student-centered learning experience. The launch event took place today 3rd December 2018, at UR Nyarugenge campus.

The laptops distributed to the students are of high quality POSITIVO i5 and they were given to those in Year one 1-4 who are willing at University of Rwanda and Rwanda Polytechnics, who are on the Government of Rwanda scholarship scheme; the payment costs of the laptop will be paid after the students graduate as they are considered as a loan.

Minister Paula INGABIRE told the students that “the effort of distributing laptops is really tidily to the Government objective of shifting from a teacher-centered methodology of learning to a more active student-centered learning experience. We are hoping you are not only going to use them to do your research to stay ahead of the curriculum and prepare better for you course work, but also we want to encourage that you have a better learning experience through online discussions that allow you in a timely manner to get feedback on the content and courses you are being given.” Noted Minister Paula INGABIRE.

In addition, she said, “Please use these laptops as the platform through which you can develop apps that your fellow colleagues are going to improve on their learning experience. Let’s not only bank on the apps that have been provided, create your own apps within the campus that will allow you to have a better learning experience. ”.

Iris KANOBANA: a student pursuing Engineering and water resources, at the University of Rwanda Nyarugenge Campus in year one, got the laptop. She explained how beneficial the laptop will be for her.

 “Several times we were given notes on our email addresses, and we had to print them out because we did not have laptops, it was not easy. Now, it is going to be easy, my computer will help me keep my documents quite well.” Spoke Iris

On the other hand, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary; Claudette IRERE launched the program in partnership with the Minister of Education at Huye Campus. Students from year 1 and 4 are eligible for this program of getting a high quality i5 Positivo laptops which are made in Rwanda.

The distribution of the laptops will continue so that self-sponsored students and those in private universities, as well as teachers in primary and secondary schools benefit from the exercise. Also, the launch event took place at UR CBE Gikondo, UR-CE Rukara Campus, UR-CBE Gikondo Campus and RP IPRC Kigali Campus.
