From High School to Farming: A success Story

After graduating at high school, Mukanjishi Petronille started her business project of poultry farming in Rusagara Cell, Gakenke Sector of Gakenke district in Rwanda's Northern Province. She is proud to generate incomes from that project.

Poultry farming has been a good source of earning for Mukanjishi, as she raises more than 330 Chickens for the purpose of producing meat and eggs.

The Government of Rwanda encourages Rwandan Youth to take the lead and create jobs that can change the financial status of their livelihood.

The young lady says she chose to refuse idleness.

“I looked at every opportunity in my locality.  That is how I found I could invest in poultry farming for my livelihood”, she says.

Mukanjishi studied animal husbandry and agriculture in high school. She had an idea to begin her own poultry farming project using the skills attained at school.

Rwanda's rural areas have been identified to bring opportunities for young business people who wish to start small business projects.

Before making the first move to chicken farm business, Mukanjishi struggled to save little money she earned by growing vegetables. Though she didn’t precise the amount, she declared that was the capital to initiate the business.

Currently, Mukanjishi's business is worth over 1.5 Million Rwandan Francs won from what she called 'forswear fears' that hinder most of the youth from starting entrepreneurship at early ages.

"Creation of jobs involves being fearless, it is impossible to gain profits without any efforts, you cannot achieve anything if you don't work," She said.

The National Youth Council's Coordinator in Gakenke District said youth of that location have been taught to create jobs as well as to embrace the saving culture.
