4G LTE Internet Bus Project launched

City of Kigali in partnership with the Ministry of Youth and ICT, Rwanda Utilities and Regulatory Agency (RURA), olleh Rwanda networks (oRn), Telecom Network Solutions Provider Ltd (TNSP), RFTC, Kigali Bus Service and Royal Express, on 18 February 2016, officially launched the Internet Bus Project as part of Smart Kigali initiative.

Smart Kigali initiative aims at modernizing the lifestyle of Kigali City dwellers and visitors through use of ICT for better service delivery. The initiative is designed to among others provide free Wi-Fi access in public places including public transportation.

Hon. Minister of Youth & ICT said: “Internet connectivity is becoming increasingly important as an enabler for a number of things as well as a lifestyle. 4G has been perceived as the Internet for high-end customers. This project proves that is a misconception and comes to break this perception by delivering the benefits of accessing ultra-fast 4G LTE Internet service to the general public in Kigali in line with the Smart Kigali Initiative”.

“The free Wi-Fi should provide genuine benefits to people on the move in terms of business continuity, entertainment and staying connected. It may be responding to that important email to close a deal, not missing your favourite team play or just catching up with friends and family. The world is moving fast and one can accomplish much without being bored on the bus.” Said Vianney Mugabo, Aggregate Mayor, City of Kigali.

The Internet Bus Project started with free 4G LTE Wi-Fi access for the trials provided in 5 buses in February 2015. So far, 487 buses in Kigali are connected with 4GLTE internet.
